Sports Law

Sports Law

Since the advent of professional status, many sports find an increasing need for legal intervention. Sport specific context is a key aspect to understanding these disputes and we take the time to fully understand that before advising.

Sporting disputes can occur at domestic, European or international level and often concern issues such as:

  • Eligibility Disputes
  • Contract Disputes
  • Commercial Disputes
  • Anti-Doping
  • Match Fixing
  • Good Governance and Procedural Fairness
  • Disciplinary Challenges
  • Enforcement of Arbitration Clauses

There are sport specific Dispute Resolution courts and mechanisms such as the Court or Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and Sport Resolutions, which use specialist processes and procedures that differ from the domestic court system in England.

We have experience in advising Clubs and and Athletes in. a variety of sports including:

  • Football
  • Rugby
  • Golf
  • Tennis
  • Horse Racing and Equestrian Sport
  • Boxing
  • Martial Arts/MMA

Contact us with details of your case, and we'll be happy to help.

Sports Agent and Intermediary Services

We also act as an intermediary or 'sports agent' for clients, assisting in their contractual negotiations at renewal or transfer stages of their career. We can advise on contracts for sponsorship and image rights, and assist you in planning your strategy throughout your career in order to manage those ancillary assets so you stay focussed on your on-field performance.

Stuart Henry is a registered intermediary with the Football Association (FA) licensed to carry out those activities for clubs and athletes. In many sports, no sport specific licensing is required, but having the support of a vocationally trained, legally qualified representative gives our clients the edge in their careers and confidence in the standards of representation they can expect.

We have a 360 degree philosophy in supporting our Sports Agent clients, offering links to financial advisors, accountants, estate agents and many other professionals to ensure that your needs are met long term. Careers in professional sport can end unexpectedly through injury or other circumstances, or otherwise have a naturally limited lifecycle. We encourage early planning for long-term life to help manage those risks and ensure good financial, reputation and athletic management.

If you are interested in becoming a Sports Agency client, contact us for a confidential discussion to see if we are the right fit for you.
